Labour Day Long Weekend & Campfire Update

Sunrise over Mount ZeldaGreetings everyone. Hope this finds you well and enjoying the end of your summer. It’s been a beautiful if a smoky one here at Koocanusa and we are thankful for the recent rains doing their part to help dampen the forest fires in our region and throughout BC. As you might have heard campfire ban has been rescinded by the BC Wildfire Service due to cooler and wetter conditions in the forecast and a decreased wildfire risk. So yes, currently small campfires are once again permitted so if having one please be sure your screen guards are in place.

If you would like more information on the current fire danger rating/forest fire news etc., please check out the following links:

May Long Weekend Updates

Greetings everyone. Hope this finds you well and look forward to seeing many of you back at Koocanusa for the upcoming Victoria Day long weekend. Just wanted to share with you a few updates to be aware of for this weekend/spring:

Spring at Lake Koocanusa by KeyaSpring Cleaning, May 15th – 18th, 2015:

We will have a large dumpster in the parking lot. Please use this for large items ie: old BBQs, bikes, chairs etc. Please do not use this for household garbage!

After this clean-up weekend please take all of your large items ie: old BBQs, chairs, large cardboard boxes etc. to the Baynes Lake or Jaffray Transfer Stations.

Recycling Cans & Bottles: We can provide you with clear bags for recycling your bottles. Come by the store or see Fred at Site 110. All recycling dropped off to Fred’s site must be in these types of bags this year. Thanks for your help! This is for pop, beer, wine, liquor, milk, juice — anything that can be turned in for a refund. The $s raised from your returns go entirely towards fireworks for our annual Canada Day Celebrations.

Propane Tanks: a reminder that propane tanks 60lbs and over must be properly secured.

BC Fire Danger Rating MapCampfires & Fire Danger: while ordinarily springtime is  traditionally a time of low forest fire danger, this is not the case in the South Country/Southern BC Rockies this year. After an unseasonably sunny, warm and dry winter and now spring, our region has a very low snowpack and the forest floors are extremely dry currently.

So while campfires are presently allowed in our campground sites please make sure that they are small, contained and put out completely afterwards. Also, as always, please be careful of disposing of cigarette butts etc. as these could easily start a fire easily right now. Click on the map to the right to see a larger/current version and visit the BC Wildfire website.

On a positive note the weather looks like it will be beautiful this weekend and lake levels are also much higher than normal for this time of year so enjoy your long weekend here at Lake Koocanusa.

Koocanusa Campground & Marina May Long Weekend Store Hours:
Friday, May 15th & Saturday, May 16th: 9am – 9pmSunday, May 17th: 9am – 7pm
