Summer’s End Updates & Long Weekend Events

Greetings everyone,

Season's End Party at Koocanusa Campsite & MarinaHope this finds you well and that the smoke has cleared in your part of the world like it has here at Koocanusa. We are very grateful for last Sunday night’s rain helping to clear the air and assist in fighting forest fires in our region.  Sorry this update has been a long time in coming and we hope to see you back here at the lake for a sunny September long weekend!

Here are a few updates for you, our campers as the season winds down:

Firstly, please join us for our annual Season’s End Party/Parking Lot Dance taking place this Sunday, Sept. 2nd at 7:30pm. We are pleased to have our friends WOMP from Lethbridge back to provide live music again. Click here for a bigger version of poster and more info, this event is free and fun for the whole family! The band also invites campers who play music to come join/jam with them on stage. Check out their facebook page and/or contact them here.

And then here are a few other important end-of-summer/fall updates for you:

  • yes, there is still a FIRE BAN IN EFFECT. For the latest on our province’s forest fire situation, please visit: www.bcwildfire.ca
  • Koocanusa2018_GototheLakeyour Storage Bills are ready for pick-up/payment at the Store. $21 (cash or cheque only.)
  • our second/final order of 2018 Koocanusa Hoodies are in stock. If you’ve ordered yours come pay for/pick them up and if you were hoping to get one, come check them out at the Store before they’re gone. Fall truly is hoodie season and they’re perfect for the boat this weekend too. 🙂
  • yes, this has been/is a horrible summer for Wasps(!) Please keep in mind our staff who collect garbage around the campground. If/when disposing of your wasp traps, ideally all wasps are dead and in any case, please tie up in a grocery/garbage bag so they don’t escape. Please also make sure all food waste is contained in sealed garbage bags to reduce attractants for wasps.photo_092718_koocaftersmoke
  • if you receive internet at your RV from South Kountry Cable, please read this Equipment Requirements (for Seasonal Shut-downs) info letter. (It will most likely have been emailed to you from SKC too.)
  • Our Store is open 9am – 9pm daily until this Sunday, Sept. 2nd. Afterwards, we’ll be open 9am – 7pm unless otherwise noted until we close on Sunday, Sept. 16th.
  • Last Day for Water & Garbage is Monday, Sept. 17th.

That should be it for now. We hope you’ve had a great summer and look forward to seeing you at the lake this long weekend hopefully, enjoy!

Hope you’re enjoying the Victoria Day Long Weekend and that many of you are out here with us at Koocanusa. As you may know the store is now open for the season and we have everything you might need to make sure your weekend is a great one. In addition to our 12 continually changing flavours of hard ice cream we now offer chocolate dipped cones and don’t forget we do milkshakes too. Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving all day breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches and loaded beef or veggie burgers. Our special this weekend is a Toasted Bagel with Cream Cheese for $3.50 (or just ask to enjoy your breakfast sandwich on a bagel.)

May Long Weekend Store Hours: 9am – 9pm (Fri/Sat/Sun)
Spring Store Hours (until Canada Day Long Weekend):
Sunday – Thursday: 9am – 7pm;
Koocanusa Ice Cream ChalkboardFriday & Saturday: 9am – 9pm

With a long, cold, snowy winter behind us and sunny, warm spring conditions in the past weeks melting this snow-pack rapidly, you’ll have noticed nearby rivers (i.e. the Elk and Bull) nearing peak levels. As a result Lake Koocanusa is currently quite a bit higher than it has been other years at the same time in May. We are on track to for a summer with lake levels slightly higher than last year which is great news for boating. Check out our “Lake Levels” page for links to the most current predictions and flow updates for 2018.

Balsam Root

Balsam Root are in bloom around the lake right now

We are thankful the hot, dry, fire-filled summer of 2017 is over. Please be mindful when having campfires whether in our campground at your site or out on Crown Land etc… small controlled campfires are currently permitted but make sure to put them out before going to bed or leaving the area. Fireworks are available at the store for your celebrations, be respectful of regulations, others and the environment when setting these off.

Looking for a fun summer job? Why not think of joining our team here at the store, we’re currently looking for a couple of people to join our staff (mid June – Labour Day weekend). Speak with Ev or Dano at the store and/or please email your resume and cover letter to info@koocanusacampsite.com Thank you and please feel free to spread the word about this to those you think might be interested.

It’s a gorgeous day at the lake, we hope you’re all having a great long weekend wherever you may be and look forward to seeing you out here again soon. 🙂

Hello everyone,

April 24th Koocanusa Morning Views

Hope you’re having a good weekend so far. Just a quick note to let you know that as promised, the water is now on throughout the campground (as of Thurs. April 26th afternoon.) Lake levels are very low as is standard for this time of year. We have enjoyed a gorgeous sunny week here with some smoke (if you’re wondering where it’s from it’s due to controlled burning in Montana.) Rain is coming tonight/tomorrow which is actually needed as it is surprisingly dry out here even though the snow has just melted recently. Back to sun again next week though, see forecast at the bottom of page.

As per usual the store will be opening on the Victoria Day Weekend (Friday, May 18th) so we will look forward to seeing many of you then.

Spring Cleaning, May 18 – 21, 2018:
We will again have a large dumpster in the parking lot on Victoria Day weekend. Please use this for large items ie: old BBQs, bikes, chairs etc. Please do not use this for household garbage!

After this clean-up weekend please take all of your large items ie: old BBQs, chairs, large cardboard boxes etc. to the Baynes Lake or Jaffray Transfer Stations.

Area Camping Options:
For those visiting our website or contacting the campground for long-term seasonal campsites, unfortunately we do not have any available. Please visit our Area Camping Options page for options available including a new private campground located just a couple of minutes up Newgate Road from us (North 40 RV).

That’s it for now. Thanks everyone and have a great weekend.

It may be snowing here Fernie this morning but thankfully the forecast looks like there is finally some spring weather insight for our southeast corner of BC, beginning tomorrow.  So we wanted to let you know the good news that we are opening up the gate to the regular lock this Friday, April 20th. No water yet but we expect and hope to be able to turn it on the following Friday (April 27th), will keep you posted if that changes.

Thanks for your patience everyone and hope it is more springlike in your neighbourhood. We look forward to seeing you back at the lake soon, don’t worry spring really is just around the corner now.
